Abstract

The invention describes a method, a communication system, a central communication unit (OLT) and a peripheral communication unit (ONU1, ..., ONUn) for transmitting information from at least one peripheral communication unit (ONU1, ..., ONUn) to a central communication unit (OLT). According to the method a maximum transmission slot size is transmitted to the at least one peripheral communication unit (ONU1, ..., ONUn). Furthermore, at least one transmission slot is requested by the at least one peripheral communication unit (ONU1, ..., ONUn), wherein the size of the at least one requested transmission slot is dependent on the maximum transmission slot size. The size of the at least one requested transmission slot may be determined in such a manner that the at least one requested transmission slot is filled entirely or almost entirely by at least a part of the information to be sent.
